A Bunk Topper For The Aft Berth
The original bunk cushions for the aft berth were VERY hard, much like sleeping on plywood and so for a period of time I used the latex mattress which I made for the CAL 35 which fit with some modifications. However, it was very heavy and was difficult to move making access to the storage under the aft berth very difficult.

At the 2012 spring Annapolis Boat show I ran into "Portland Mattresses" who makes custom latex toppers for existing berths (as well as completely new mattresses if desired) and they offered a 2.5" thick topper for the aft bunk for a very reasonable price.

Portland Mattresses provide a clear, dimensionally stable material to make the template with

In the case of this bunk, it tucks under the headboard and so the pattern needed to be marked to not the overlap as the topper will need to avoid the headboard. However, the template needs to reflect what the underlying mattress is like so that when I have custom sheets made the template will reflect what the underlying mattress will need.

Here is the template tucked under the headboard.

Then I cut the template to match the drop from the headboard to the bunk.

Then to get the shape of the top edge of the mattress I had a tarp which I made a template of the edge of the full mattress

The resultant mattress fits perfectly and is much more comfortable.
