Transmission:

Borg Warner V-Drive w/2.5:1 reduction gearbox

There are many people who will tell you that this transmission can be allowed to free wheel indefinitely. Because it is a hydraulically shifted transmission when the engine is turned off the pressure is lost and the shaft will free wheel. It turns out that the transmission can be damaged by free wheeling, there is a specific set of shaft RPMs which convert to how often the engine must be started to lubricate the bearings. I managed to spin the reverse bearing in the planetary gear assembly when surfing downwind for several days going into the Bahammas. Luckily it did not stop the transmission from functioning correctly but it did put metal shavings all through the transmission resulting in an expensive overhaul. (The Max Prop cost less than the overhaul) and stopped the shaft from spinning!

Add here the excerpt from the transmission manual noting the amount that the transmission can be spun without damage.

Add a comment about transmission rebuilds almost always cost $2500
