Botany Bay Sails To Midway
September 13, 2001
My last few weeks on Kwajalein were filled with preparing Botany Bay for sea while at the same time packing out my belongings for returning to work in the "real world". Either one would have been a major endeavor but together it was almost too much.

Tani Arrived from Los Angeles via Honolulu leaving Los Angeles on September 10th, 2001. If her planned departure had been a day later she would not have arrived for a couple of weeks due to the events of September 11th.

We are just leaving Kwajalein on September 13th (September 12th in the states), a day after our planned departure after things settled down a bit. We sailed down the east reef and out Bigej Pass.

Our first stop was Likiep Atoll, about 24 hours from Kwajalein directly upwind. We motor sailed most of the way as a shakedown of Botany Bay's systems and to get Tani comfortable with where everything is.

We stayed three days at Likiep walking around the island, enjoying the views, and just resting.

Then it was onward for Midway Island, almost the furthest west bit of land in the Hawaiian Island chain. The passage was a rough one with few pictures but the weather fax images tell the tale of spending several days in a feeder storm for a small typhoon. Tani was a real trooper and the two of us sailed Botany Bay through some of the roughest weather I have ever sailed in.
