Rick and His Sat Phone
Rick rented a Satellite Phone for the trip so he could upload updates for work and talk with his wife (his anniversary was while we were at sea). He spent many afternoon hours at Midway trying to get the phone to connect to his computer. The speed was 2400 baud. It was not until we had been at sea for a few days that the phone seemed to settle down. There may have been some interference issue around Midway which impacted the data connection but allowed the voice system to function correctly.
Here Rick still has a smile on his face about the phone. After a week of trying he was getting rather frustrated with the system. In the end, we developed a set of rules of thumb (i.e. voodoo) which seemed to improve the behavior of the system. For much of the trip I had significantly better reliability getting in with the HF data connection. However, when it worked we could put a significant amount of e-mail out and even download weather faxes off the net.
Rick became more and more frustrated with the "customer service" provided with the phone. Eventually he got in touch with a technician who knew something about connecting the phone to the net and managed to make contact with the net.
